Merino 101

Merino wool has always been regarded as a miracle fibre. It’s light, super soft and packed with natural technology that has evolved over thousands of years to protect sheep in harsh climates. That in-built technology also makes Merino wool the perfect performance fabric for golfers. Here’s why:

  • Temperature regulation: Merino wool knows exactly when to trap warm air to keep you toastie and when to release it to keep you cool and dry. So whether you’re teeing off in the dawn chill and finishing in high sun, or playing in a location that’s subject to ever-changing weather conditions, Merino has you covered.

  • Moisture management: Merino wool fibres are hygroscopic, meaning they actively draw moisture away from the skin so it can evaporate in the air while keeping you dry and comfortable. In fact Merino wool can absorb up to a third of its weight in moisture vapour before feeling damp, making it perfect for playing in warm or humid conditions.

  • Odour resistance: Unlike synthetic materials such as polyester, Merino wool traps odours and holds onto them until washed. So feel confident about wearing your Ramsie Golf Shirt all day long, both on the course and in the clubhouse.

  • Hypoallergenic: Ramsie Golf Shirts are made from the superfine category of Merino wool, where fibre diameters are just 17-19 microns (a typical human hair is 50 microns). This eliminates any chance of itching and scientific studies show that superfine Merino wool also reduces eczema symptoms such as skin dryness, redness, itchiness and inflammation in infant and adult sufferers alike.

  • UV protection: With a typical round of golf taking 4-5 hours, that means a lot of exposure to harmful ultra-violet rays that can cause premature skin aging, immune system damage, eye problems and skin cancer. Fortunately Merino sheep have evolved over thousands of years to develop a fleece with a UV protection factor (UPF) of 50 that blocks 97% of UV rays. By comparison the typical UPF for polyester is 15, and for cotton it’s just 5.

  • Machine washable: That’s right, the days of hand washing or dry cleaning are gone. Just set your machine to a gentle setting and you’re good to go. Pro tip: the resilient and anti-odour properties of Merino wool means there’s no need to wash your Ramsie Golf Shirt after each round. In fact, you can quite easily wear your shirt four or five times between washes. Just let it air for a few hours and it will be fresh and ready to look after you for another day.

  • Sustainable: While this feature of Merino wool won’t necessarily improve your game, we trust you’ll feel a sense of confidence and pride knowing that your shirt is made from a sustainable, renewable and biodegradable source and designed and manufactured right here in Australia.
